What are the USMLE Pathways:

Surely you have heard a lot about the new pathways in the USMLE system after the STEP 2 CS exam was canceled... In this article, we have collected all the details, God willing.


Currently, there is something called USMLE pathways in order to become ECFMG certified and you can progress to the match and count 6 paths.


Well, let's say what is the Requirements of ECFMG certificate.


Requirements of ECFMG certificate 

1- Of course, you must be a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine.

2- If after 2024, your college must be accredited by WFME – World Federation for Medical Education , and to know, you will enter their website and search for your country, you will find the body responsible for accreditation and its website, for example, in Egypt, you will find the website of the National Authority for Quality Accreditation and Accreditation ( NAQAAE ) and through the website You can know whether your university is accredited or not, but if it is before 2024 (currently), your college must be on the WDOMS – World Directory of Medical Schools website .

3- She passed the STEP 1 & STEP 2 exam

4- She passed the OET exam

5- She progresses and accepts any of the pathways that we will explain in detail in this article.


First: USMLE PATHWAY 1

 And you can apply for it if you have a license to practice medicine in any country other than America, whether your home country or another country.

In other words, this is for GP and above.


Second: USMLE PATHWAY 2 

for applicants who Already Passed an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)


 This is for people who have taken the OSCE exam, which is a clinical exam, which is equivalent to the step 2 CS exam, like, for example, BLAB 2 or Part 2 of the Australian equation.


Third: USMLE PATHWAY 3 

In order to apply for it, your university must be accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education, and you can enter their website and see the accredited colleges (like the picture) and also (as we explained in point number 2 in the requirements)








 Fourth: USMLE PATHWAY 4

In order to apply for it, your university must be accredited by the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA).

On their website, you will find the details of the universities and the pathway number on their website.


Fifth: USMLE PATHWAY 5 

And this is the most difficult path for them, because your college must be a dual degree with America, and this is only available in two or three colleges worldwide.


Sixth: USMLE PATHWAY 6 

This is for people who took the Step 2 CS exam and failed before.

This is an Online OSCE Test, and on the basis of this they determine whether you are qualified to be ECFMG certified or not.

 

Any of the six pathways is only valid for two years, meaning you can apply to the match twice during them. Well, if God forbid and you did not accept it in the two years, then you will have to retake the OET exam and apply for the pathway again.
